Keeping Away From Bad Business Web Hosts
Try googling and you’ll find a huge amount of business class web hosting nightmare stories. Many companies have their websites hosted without knowing it by teenagers. Imagining where their website and emails have just vanished off the planet, and their host isn’t answering emails (well they won’t be able to!) or telephone. The cause? Little Alex has been grounded for getting a detention and had his computer taken away as well. Ok, so my hypothetical situation sounds a bit far fetched doesn’t it? Again, have a Google- there are far worse situations where webmasters have found themselves in a whole world of hurt. Why? Well they ended up picking the wrong web hosting company. While there’s no foolproof way of picking out bad webhosts, there is some tips I will give you on typical signs on the website of the company.
Hosts website has no contact address.
No contact address for a start breaks distance selling regulations in the UK. What good company wouldn’t provide a postal address to send a letter to in case of a problem? A buisness which hasn’t advertised a postal address sticks like a bedroom web host.
Reckoning to have multiple datacentres of there own.
I don’t know about you, but I like doing business with companies that are honest, or at least as honest as possible. If you ran a small local shop, you wouldn’t claim to own a chain of supermarkets nationwide. This is the same for web hosts reckoning to ‘have’ their own datacentre. A lot of hosting companies claim to be operating their own business website hosting, when in truth it’s managed dedicated servers. I can tell you as a fact that only a tiny proportion of hosts have the time and the resources to run their own datacentre. Not owning your own datacentre isn’t neccessarily a bad thing. But for a web host to begin claiming these things when they do not is never good.
Speedy response to any emails sent?
Being in the 21st century email is the choice of communication for most people. Say you have a few pre-sales questions about what your thinking of buying, you would expect to send and email and get a reply back to your inbox. Its the same as if a company did not answer the phone, would you want to trust them with your business? Similarly if a web host takes more than a day to reply to a sales email it does not bode well. Well if it takes them so long to answer a sales email, which is what can make them some money, how long will they take if you need support? But having said that, don’t be fooled by the web hosts that respond to sales emails instantly, but if you want help, they don’t care.
How’s your host’s English?
A large indicator normally will be the professionalism of a web host, how does there spelling and grammar come across? You have no doubt come accross websites with wrongly spelt words who claim to be the ‘garetest’ web host on the ‘word wipe web’. What if your host can’t take the time to spell check their website or has not the ability to spell, the spiel they want to sell to you with, how can you trust them with your website?
So how do I find a good web host?
There are some trustworthy business web hosts. The above pointers only touch the iceberg of spotting a bad web host. Making your choice on a web host is very hard. When picking your next business quality web host, make sure you do your home work please. Sear the internet for reviews, and also speak to existing customers. Google is a fantastic tool for dishing the dirt. Also try searching the company, you never know what might come up. Above all, remember when you pay for your hosting, pay monthly so you can move on if the host turns bad, and if the nasty stuff does hit the wall make sure you get a backup. Take care.
